Mexican rugby aims for Olympic ticket for RAN 7 tournament in Canada

After podium finishes at the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador 2023, the men’s and women’s national teams will face off at the Rugby Americas North (RAN) 7’s 2023, which will be held on August 19-20 in Langford, Canada, with the Pass to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Mexican delegation held earlier rallies at the Villas Tlalpan facilities of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport (CONADE) and made their way this Wednesday to the host city where the event, which is also a World Rugby, is taking place Sevens Trades Challenger Series 2024 qualifiers will be held at Starlight Stadium.

Alessandra Bender, Mara Fernanda Tovar, Irayda Macedo, Jennifer Salomón, Laura Rodrguez, Cecilia Ramrez, Vanessa Rodrguez, Zoe Tuy, Bertha Landeros, Isabela González, Karla Ortiz, and Erika Farias, team led by Alessandro Cordone

“We will play against Canada, who has a strong rival. The idea is to give them good competition, and we hope to win this pass, but we will also have the opportunity to play. “Both teams have a common goal, and it’s Mexico,” assured Alessandra Bender.

The men’s team, bronze medalists in San Salvador 2023, consists of:

Andrés Rodrguez, Mauricio De la Torre, Ricardo Ancira, Nicolás Falcón, Alejandro Revilla, Juan Pablo Martnez, Luis Galindo, Alberto Rodrguez, Christopher Cole, Franco Guerrero, Alejandro Chávez, and Enrique Carmona, a team led by coach Terry Bouhraoua.

“We’ve got a very tough challenge ahead of us in the men’s; the United States and Canada are favorites, but our goal is to win that place at the Olympics or get into the playoffs next year.” Those are our two Options, but we intend to aim for that classification,” commented Andrés Rodrguez.

The women’s group, consisting of Mexico, Canada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Jamaica, and St. Lucia, will compete in a round-robin format for a ticket to the Sevens Challenger Series and the Olympics.

For men, our country is in Group A, along with the United States and Bermuda, while Group B consists of Canada, Jamaica, Barbados, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The top-placed team qualifies for Paris 2024, and the second- and third-placed teams qualify for a final qualifying tournament.
