ARLINGTON, Texas, USA ( Associated Press) — With a goal by Santiago Giménez and an own goal by William Troost, Mexico beat Nigeria 2-1 on Saturday in a warm-up match for this year’s World Cup.
Giménez rocked the nets in the 12th minute and Troost made his blunder in the 65th to give the Mexican team the win.
El Tri began their warm-up to the Qatar World Cup with the friendly against the Nigerians. A tour of the United States will follow on Thursday, playing against Uruguay in Arizona.
With a rather alternate squad, coach Gerardo Martino would define the last pieces of his squad to go to Qatar. Also, the Argentine strategist seeks to improve the performance after a lackluster end of the World Cup qualifying round.
“It seems to me that we have recovered many things that we never stopped trying but we were not doing well,” said Martino.
Giménez, striker for Cruz Azul, took advantage of an error by the Nigerian defense to convert with a shot at the near post.
“Santi showed his qualities, beyond the goal… I understand that he is much more linked to the future, but we are very hard-headed that he is part of the present”, Martino valued.
The Green Eagles tied at 54, after a cross from the left. Cyriel Dessers hit a header that goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota deflected, but the ball went into the back of the net.
Mexico regained the lead when Troost missed after a header that hit the crossbar and went into the goal.
The team led by the Argentine Martino will debut in the World Cup on November 22, with a match against Poland, their Group C rival, completed by Argentina and Saudi Arabia.
Nigeria did not qualify for the World Cup.
