The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not ruled out alternatives

The Undersecretary of Foreign Relations, Gloria de la Fuente, addressed the proposed evacuation method, regarding the border crisis where hundreds of migrants find themselves unable to move between Chile and Peru.

For this reason, the authority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that for the time being the Government does not exclude any particular measure, whether it is an exit by air or land through a humanitarian corridor. “We need to generate agreement. There has been talk of a humanitarian corridor, whether by land or air, I believe that no alternative should be excluded,” the secretary said.

De la Fuente assures that “we see the possibilities we have to respect this, although migration is not a new phenomenon, what is new is that we are dealing with a significant number of people who are only looking to leave the country.”

Until now, different options have been considered to provide a way for people stuck in the border area between the Peruvian city of Tacna and Arica, in northern Chile.

Last week, the Venezuelan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, referred to the situation, insisting on the care of human rights at the border by the authorities. In addition, he suggested the possibility of establishing return flights for the citizens of this country.

The undersecretary said, in conversation with T13 Radio, that “for now, I would not (…) focus on the conversation about the airline or not, rather I would say that we are working and looking for all the alternatives they think about are stronger and better” : this, due to the questioning of the line that the Venezuelan minister proposed to carry out the flights.

This, in turn, was not well received by some Chilean parliamentarians, who proposed the implementation of the armed forces in the country to fly to transport people to their country of origin.

“No kind of solution can be excluded, we are open to all possibilities. Even, in the conversation with countries in the region, we already have a meeting scheduled for this week at the level of undersecretary or vice minister of foreign affairs in the region in the face of the migration dispute “, added de la Fuente.

In addition, the secretary referred to the concern for human rights at the border, and indicated that this was a concern of the administration: “we signed agreements and treaties on this matter, we were very respectful in that and For the same reason, all the agencies are coordinated at the regional level to assist all these difficulties”.

Regarding the tension that existed between Peru and Chile, he assured that the relationship with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the neighboring country is good, and “we continued to communicate all these days, monitoring the situation of the northern border and a very fluid dialogue (. ..) So the truth is that there is no situation of tension with Peru, if clearly both countries are concerned”.
