Migration crisis: US Coast Guard returns 96 more rafters in recent days

The crew of the Paul Clark ship repatriated 46 rafters from Cuba this Thursdayreported in Tweet US Coast Guard.

“We are doubling patrols to make sure the death toll doesn’t rise,” said Captain Kinsey of the US Coast Guard’s 7th District.

On Wednesday, another 50 Cubans were returned by the crew of the ship Pablo Valentines, according to a Tweet of the US Coast Guard.

A video that accompanies that tweet shows how a ship from the American Institute intercepts a rustic boat of Cuban rafters. The encounter took place on September 19, 33 miles south of Bahia Honda State Park in Florida. The 17 arrested are among those who returned home on Wednesday.

The current Cuban migration crisis has broken past migration records. In the month of August, 20,031 Cubans arrived in the US, an average of 646 each day. There are already 197,870 during the current US fiscal year beginning October 1, 2021, which is about 2% of the island’s population.

In an effort to regularize official channels to manage migration, The US government on Tuesday announced a complete reopening of the consular services of its embassy in Havana, Cubans no longer have to travel to countries like Guyana to apply for a visa in the US.
