Mike Bray will host the Notre Dame team at his home for the selection Sunday. Unlike last year, except for a sudden change of heart by the selection committee, the Irish would be waiting for their name to pop up. Should that unlikely misfortune happen, their 87-80 ACC tournament quarterfinal loss to Virginia Tech would certainly have been a contributing factor. However, this is only a worst-case scenario, and virtually no college basketball expert is listing the Irish as a bubble team.
Bray addressed the media along with Irish players Prentiss Haub and Cormac Ryan, who did their best in the defeat. Most of the conversation apparently revolves around what he recently had against the Hokies. There was also talk of how well the team is getting along and what they have been able to achieve so far this season. Here’s what some Irish coaches and players had to say:
“Well, we’ve dug a heck of a hole ourselves, and I guess you have to give Virginia Tech credit. I’m very impressed with them. They’ve been a tough matchup for us lately. Those two big guys. Incredible tone set and play well together.
In the second half we got a little bit better momentum, but couldn’t defend really well against a really talented offensive team. ,
“If you’re helping their shooters and you drop 3s in the double digits, I don’t think you really have a chance.
We at least, I thought, would have – had a shot because they only made seven 3s. But those couplets are justified—they kind of break the soul when they’re so deep.”
“You have to get them out a little bit. You’re not going to just shut them down.”
“I thought some of our drives were forced, and secondly that we had some lay-ups. Even after we did a forced drive, we missed some lay-ups, which are just deflating, and You are in a hole now.”
“We just thought with their two big guys, can we have a little more shape when they start to back off because we really didn’t want the shooters to come out and help. As you saw in the second — It’s tough when Dane is guarding an elder who is just about to back down.
It was a little bit, let’s try something different. Obviously that experiment wasn’t great, and I’m responsible for that.
I’m not sure who will start next week, but we have time to find out.
“I thought we were in a pretty good offensive rhythm. We drove it a little bit more. We got into our pace a little bit more. We just could never put together enough stops in a row. It was like every second. It was a difficult hurdle to overcome.”
“You know, Mutt is almost a one-man show. He turns on the guard, and it’s really hard to get by. He can definitely get the big guys. He’s a really amazing guy and team defender “
“We can attribute that to me. I’m the point guard. I think I started the game with that crazy business, and I think it just went downhill from there. Being a point guard, I have to take care of the ball and jump too.”
“That’s what we’ve done all year long to be successful. Like you said, we’re a group that shares it freely, and we have tremendous chemistry on and off the court. Same goes for us. In times like these When we’re struggling, we’re not doing it. And being connected as five on both ends of the court is paramount to our success, even more than other teams, because we are what we are. Huh.
“I think we played a little better in the second half. I don’t know exactly what point you are referring to, but during the second half, I think the point between us was that we have to focus on getting the stops and sharing the ball. We did this sometimes. We scored a run. We threw a punch back, which this group will always punch. ,
“I think we can’t focus on this game. The only thing we can really do is learn from it. We just have to be ready to play, and I think it’s not – we have to I’ll have to think about who we play when we find out on Sunday and stick to what we have to do. And I think we just need a good week of practice, and whether we can practice before that game. Do it, and just take this defeat away and try to win another one.
“I think we’re going to be focused and starved, and it makes you feel better that you’re going to have another crack. And we’re going to — I think obviously that’s a pretty hard loss, But if anything, it will definitely set a little fire in our stomachs, which I don’t think is a bad thing.”
“I’m so proud of this group because a year ago on Selection Sunday, they were at my house and we saw the show, and that was a kind of miserable day, and it was a countdown to 365 days to be part of Selection Sunday. .and what they’ve done is great.”
