Minnesota State Park Freebies on Black Friday

Want to avoid the big crowds on Black Friday? Head out, and it’s on sale too.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is waiving admission fees at all 75 state parks and recreation areas Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

The DNR offers four free park days each year, one in each season, to encourage all Minnesotans to get outside and enjoy the benefits of nature all year round.

“Public land is for the enjoyment of all of us,” DNR commissioner Sarah Strowman said in a statement. “Free park days ensure that everyone has the chance to experience the peace and beauty of Minnesota’s state parks and recreation areas. There’s no better time to do this with family and friends than after the Thanksgiving celebrations.”

State parks and recreation areas are open year-round and most Minnesotans have at least one park within 30 miles.

Most state park offices and visitor centers will be minimally staffed on Fridays, so visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and prepare for their visit:

  • Check visitor alerts and get directions to state park web pages at mndnr.gov.
  • Download GeoPDF maps before you travel. These maps will display the user’s current location, such as Google Maps or other map applications, but do not require the user to be connected to the Internet or have cell service while using them.
  • Visit the self-orientation signs near the park entrance for tips on what to see and do during the visit.
  • Help preserve these special places for the future by staying on the trails and leaving no trace.
