Mission Bay Girls Beach Volleyball Season Ends Strong

Thanks to a strong end to the regular season, the Mission Bay women’s beach volleyball team solidified their case for reaching the post season, while their aspirations of becoming champions remain alive.

The 23-player team scored 3-4 runs on aggregate, leaving them top of the playoffs after two big wins to close out the regular season.

“This year, we are bringing in more girls than ever before,” said head coach Brittany Johnson. “The lineup changes weekly based on several factors.”

The team has made a number of exceptional performances, and Johnson points to the top four players, seniors Grace Berryhill and Emily Hernandez, as well as sisters Justin Higman and Jaden Higman, who will be attending USC next year.

After starting with back-to-back defeats to Coronado and University City, the team earned their first win of the season in a dramatic 3–2 fashion on March 17 over Claremont. They would retreat in the next two games against La Jolla and Cathedral Catholic, but would find their way back once again by beating Academy of Our Lady Peace on April 13 and Scripps Ranch on April 14 for their third regular season win. .. station.

“The season has gone as expected,” Johnson said. “Due to the pandemic years and the new CIF situation, the structure of the league put us at a disadvantage. Last season was a minor pandemic, but we did well.”

Johnson has been the head coach since the Beach Volleyball League’s inception in 2014, but the sport has been part of her life and passion since she was 16 years old. Growing up in Houston, Johnson and her best friend Laura Strunk made it a point. Participate in as many junior tournaments as possible in Galveston, Texas.

“I knew I wanted to end up in San Diego where I could play every day,” Johnson said. “After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, I moved in 2010 and never looked back.”

The Books will know if they will participate in the postseason on April 25, with the CIF playoffs from April 28 to May 7 and the finals at San Diego Mesa College.
