AUSTIN, Texas, USA ( Associated Press) – Austin FC on Friday announced a deal with Argentine forward Emiliano Rigoni to join the MLS club under a named player contract.
The financial terms of Rigoni’s transfer from Brazilian team So Paulo were not disclosed. Austin FC indicated that Rigoni received a guaranteed contract until 2024 with extension options for the next two seasons. The club elaborated that the 29-year-old Argentine would arrive in Austin “in the next few weeks” after receiving his visa.
“We are very excited to welcome Emiliano and his family to Austin,” said Austin FC Sporting Director Claudio Reyna. “He is an attacker who has a lot of quality and experience to compete in some of the best leagues in the world. His skills fit perfectly with our style of play.”
Austin is in second place in the MLS Western Conference in its second season.
Rigoni has scored 55 goals in 307 matches. His arrival in MLS reunites him with fellow Austin midfielder Sebastian Drewsy. They were previously teammates at Zenit St Petersburg in Russia.
“Austin FC is an ambitious club and I look forward to helping the organization achieve its goals this season and beyond,” Rigoni said in a statement.
Argentina occupies the designated player position which was created with the departure of Cecilio Dominguez, the first player signed by the club. The team announced last week that the Paraguayan striker and the club had “mutually agreed” to split.
Dominguez had not played since April, when he was initially suspended by MLS while the league and local police investigated a report of domestic abuse involving his teammate. He was not arrested and no charges were filed.
That suspension was later lifted, but Dominguez never returned to court.
