1,000 signatures calling for divestment from fossil fuels at key COP round

On the day that the political negotiation phase of the Dubai Climate Summit began, a very heterogeneous group of signatories sent an open letter to the president of COP28, Sultan Al Jaber, to agree to an “orderly departure from fossil fuels.”.

COP28 leader assures that “there is no scientific evidence” that justifies the reduction of fossil energy consumption

The text calls for achieving a result “already in line with the objective of 1.5ºC” as a limit to global warming because “it is too late.” Among the signatories are the scientist Jane Goodall and the Bezos Foundation, as well as executives from companies such as Danone, Nestlé, Ikea, and Acciona. A very diverse set includes “spiritual leaders.”

The letter is short and includes three points:

  • The orderly abandonment of fossil fuels, coal, oil, and gas, “in an equitable manner and consistent with the 1.5ºC trajectory while tripling renewable energy and doubling energy efficiency.”
  • “Create an environment that allows public and private finance to increase” and for developed countries to “lead the support” in addition to putting a price on carbon.
  • Stop and reverse deforestation and land degradation, along with loss of biodiversity

And they conclude by saying that these goals must be achieved through “national plans” presented in 2025. The plans must take into account the technical conclusion of the Global Balance.

Sultan Al Jaber used this letter to try to boost negotiations after his words about the lack of scientific evidence about the need to move away from fossil fuels damaged his position at COP28. From that moment on, he repeatedly insisted that he was only guided by science. “Now is the start of the hard part,” he said Friday while quoting the letter. “Expectations are high, and breaking the blockade is the challenge that the parties have before them.” A blockade that particularly affects the discussion of fossil fuels, how to end their use, and in exchange for what.
