Breakfast is the meal with the most relevant changes. Although toast with coffee, milk or other milk continues to be what Spaniards eat most for breakfast (34%), fruit has already become the second choice. This is indicated by Nestlé in its 10th edition of the Observatory of Nutritional Habits and Family Lifestyle. On this occasion, he wanted to make a retrospective, how we were, and how we are at the table a decade later.
Ten years ago, only 7% of fruit was eaten in the first meal of the day, compared to 20% today. This is the percentage that, in the past, used to use cookies and art, occupying the second and third place in the usual Spanish meals, and for which today only 14% of those surveyed opt.
“The Nestlé Observatory shows a great change when more than half of the Spaniards, 54%, say that they have changed their breakfast in ten years and have done so by incorporating better habits. For example, a bowl of yogurt with cereal and toast with avocado has burst into force. Its intake has more than doubled with the last decade compared to the current consumption of cookies or cakes”, explained Laura González, Head of Nutrition at Nestlé Spain.
Today one in four Spaniards (25%) opts for one plate at lunch while years ago they ate a starter and another. The Nestle Observatory also indicates that 25% of the people who years ago most often included meat in their lunch, today avoid it. Among these lines, almost half of Spaniards, 45%, claim to consume more herbs than a decade ago and up to 35% claim to include more vegetables.
At dinner, more than 20% of Spaniards who prepared a traditional menu in the past now prefer something fast. Instead of plates with various foods, today they eat a small dinner: yogurt or fruit.
Laura González: “The Nestlé Observatory shows a great change since more than half of Spaniards, 54%, say that they have changed their breakfast for ten years and have made better habits by incorporating it.”
In relation to tables, the fruit of the main choice of 44% of those surveyed, thirteen points more than ten years, followed by natural yogurt, which 14% opted for, five points more than years. 20% chose a piece of pasta or pastry as the top of their lunch or dinner, today only 8% of Spaniards do a little.
“In this edition of the Observatory we see very interesting changes in attitude, although there are others that remain. It’s a case of pecking. More than 30% between food a decade ago and food still do today. The habit is very ingrained. Therefore, it is important that, in this event, we opt for foods of high nutritional quality such as a few raw or roasted nuts or fruits. Both options are very good”, underlined González.
