Moving on: Musgrove starts unbeaten for Padres at Wrigley

Here’s a look at what’s happening around the big companies on Thursday:

some ordinary

Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove set a career record 47–47 in seven seasons this debut at Wrigley Field. But he has been one of the best pitchers in the majors this year, going 7-0 with a 1.50 ERA in 11 starts.

Musgrove, 29, has allowed only one earned run in 27 innings in his last four starts.

Rookie Matt Swarmer starts for the Cubs. In his last outing, he was drafted for six home runs in five innings at Yankee Stadium.

Ohtani’s turn

Angels star Shohei Ohtani is on the mound to start the five-match series in Seattle.

Ohtani (4-4, 3.64 ERA) coming from seven impressive innings in the win over Boston. He has scored 71 runs in 54 1/3 innings.

The current AL MVP has been doing well over the past 10 days, increasing his batting average from 240 to .260.

The Phillies will no longer be close to Corey Nebel in that role in the near future.

After another volatile outing after losing 11-9 to the Marlins on Tuesday night, interim manager Rob Thomson said Nebel would take a step back to focus on his mechanics.

Nebel signed a one-year, $10 million contract in the off-season to help bolster Philadelphia’s leaky bullpen. But he saved four times and posted an ERA of 4.91 since May 5, scoring 13 runs in 14 2/3 innings in that stretch.

“For the foreseeable future, we’ll put him in a position where he can breathe a little bit because he’s not throwing the ball where he wants to,” Thomson said. “And he knows.”

Nebel said: “The decision has been made. I’m going to do my job.”

Thomson indicated that the Phillies will be using a near-rate committee approach for some time, with Serantheny Dominguez as the potential recipient of the most savings opportunities.

Haider Door

Milwaukee Brewers close aide Josh Haider has been placed on the paternity list and is expected to have three days off.

The roster move came on Wednesday, while Haider made 19 saves for the major league lead with San Diego’s Taylor Rogers. The left-hander is 0-1 this season with a 0.92 ERA in 21 matches.

The Brewers replaced Haider by activating the recently acquired Chi Chi Gonzalez and adding him to their bullpen.

bounce back?

Rangers lefty Martin Perez is looking to improve on his past performances when pitching in Detroit.

Perez led the AL with a 1.56 ERA when he started last weekend against the White Sox. He was tagged for the season’s highest seven runs and 12 hits in 5 innings.

Perez (4-2, 2.18 ERA) faces a Tigers team that has outscored 33-6 in a four-game loss. Detroit lost 13-0 to the White Sox on Wednesday and held a players-only meeting after the loss.
