Mustakas, Drury Power Reds register 8-2 win over Pirates

PITTSBURGH ( Associated Press) — Mike Mustakas homed twice and Brandon Drury pulled out of a slump with four runs to give the Cincinnati Reds an 8-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night.

Mustakas hit a single shot in the right field stand in the fourth innings and broke the 2-2 draw. In the seventh, there was another single homer by the two batsmen to make it 8-2 after a two-run drive from Dury.

It was the 15th multihomer game for Mustakas, who has 199 career home runs. He helped the Reds win for the sixth time in eight matches after a 3-22 start.

Tyler Mahle (2-4) won for the first time since the first day, breaking a six-start winless streak. He conceded two runs for five hits in six innings, while scoring one run in eight innings.

The Reds starters have played six innings in back-to-back games after not making that far in the first 31 matches of the season.

Drew’s two-run double in the fifth gave the Reds a 5-2 lead. He had batted 14 times without a hit.

Mitch Keller (0-5) remained without a win as he was tagged for five runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. He has scored 13 runs since his last win against Colorado at PNC Park on May 21, 2020.

Of the 16 balls played against Keller, 11 had an exhaust velocity of at least 95 mph.

The Pirates have skipped the first two games of the four-game series after taking two of three from the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers to start the week.

Tyler Nquin of Cincinnati achieved doubles in two of his three hits.

Ben Gemmel, who opened the scoring with the first leadoff home run of his career, and Daniel Vogelbach had two hits each for the Pirates.

The Reds went 2-1 in the top of the third when Naquin and Kyle Farmer hit back-to-back doubles and TJ Friedle did a sacrificial fly.

K’Brien Hayes countered by an RBI double at the bottom of the innings.

Mustakas broke the tie in the fourth with his first homer and the Reds rolled from there.

risky business

Pittsburgh center fielder Brian Reynolds is on 1 for 25 with the runners in the scoring position this year after going hitless twice in those conditions. He is batting on a total of 214 runs after making his All-Star Game debut last season.

Gutierrez to Bullpen

The Reds are leading struggling right-hander Vladimir Gutierrez towards the bullpen. He is 0-5 with an 8.65 ERA in six after winning nine games as a rookie last year.

With the Reds going from six starting pitchers to five, right-hander Connor Overton will remain in the rotation. The 28-year-old rookie is 1-0 with 1.59 ERA in three starts.

Reds manager David Bell said of Gutierrez, “I look forward to seeing him exit the bullpen, but that doesn’t mean it’s a long-term decision.” “He could easily go back into the rotation. He is going to be built enough that going back to start from where it would be an easy transition.”

roster moves

The Pirates added RHP Tyler Bead to the active roster a day after claiming an exemption from San Francisco. He will be used as a relief.

“The stuff is there,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said of the first-round draft pick in 2014. “We think our staff can help with that.”

LHP Cam Aldredge was selected for Triple-A Indianapolis after scoring a scoreless innings in his major league debut against the Reds on Thursday.

The Pirates also lost lefty reliever Sam Howard to Detroit on a waiver claim.

instructor room

Reds: 1b Joy Votto (COVID-19) has started hitting a T-shirt and is expected to start playing the rehab game in the next few days. The 2010 NL MVP has been sidelined since May 2.

Reds: RHP Luis Castillo (0-0, 5.79 ERA) will make his second start of the season on Saturday night. He did not pitch in Spring Training and missed the first 28 games due to a shoulder strain.

Pirates: RHP Zach Thompson (1-3, 7.08) played five scoreless innings against the Reds last Sunday, but that didn’t factor into the decision.
