Namibia intensifies security after rhino’s death

Namibian officials say the southern African country is seeing a boom in rhino poaching, with 11 killed this month. Dead rhinos found in Namibia’s Etosha National Park without their horns are worth thousands of dollars in illegal Asian markets.

Simson Uri-Khob, CEO of Namibia’s Save the Rhino Trust, said the discovery of 11 illegal rhino carcasses cannot be treated as an isolated incident.

He said the demand for rhino horn is increasing, which has led to an increase in poaching incidents in Namibia. They suspect that organized criminals are behind the murders.

Uri said, “It’s hard to point a finger at who it was, but I’m sure it’s organized crime syndicate and part of the community because they’re the ones who know the area, they guide the hunters from my experience.” ”, said Uri-Khob.

Romeo Muyunda, public relations officer of the Ministry of Environment, Tourism and Forestry, said action would be taken to protect the rhinos.

“The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, together with the Namibian Police Force, the NDF (Namibian Defense Force) and other partners, will intensify our patrolling, security and intelligence, especially in Etosha National Park,” Muyunda said.

He asked the public to help the authorities in investigating the murders.

“Till date, no arrests have been made in the incident where the bodies were discovered. Investigation is on in this regard,” Muyunda said. “We call on members of the public to come forward and report back with information relating to this incident and any other poaching activity or any other wildlife crime incident.”

A total of 22 rhinos have been killed by poachers in Namibia this year.

Namibia is home to 1,500 to 2,000 black rhinos – about a third of the world’s black rhinoceros population. The endangered species is targeted for its horn, which is used for jewelry in Asian countries, and for its alleged but unproven medicinal purposes.
