The National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to conduct an examination to allow non-Muslim doctors who have migrated from Pakistan to practice medicine in India. A group of experts has been formed to prepare guidelines for a proposed exam to allow medical graduates from minorities. Among these minorities were those who got Indian citizenship for practice and permanent registration.
The commission’s move has come as a ray of hope for many doctors, who are unable to legally practice medicine in India after migrating from Pakistan. For decades many people from Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Christian minority groups from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan have migrated to India and are seeking citizenship.
Significantly, 8,244 citizenship applications were received from non-Muslims from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, out of which 3,117 were granted citizenship.
