NBA warns Warriors, other Christmas Day teams that COVID schedule may change

by Tim Reynolds

The NBA’s 10 teams with games scheduled for Christmas were told by the league on Tuesday that if virus-related issues alter the lineup, shifting some game time is a possibility for the planned five-game slate.

The league told teams the priority was to fill the ABC window for Saturday’s games, meaning slots would be 2:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Eastern. For now, in those games, Milwaukee will have Boston, Phoenix in Golden State, and the Los Angeles Lakers in Brooklyn.

Other games on the Christmas program are Atlanta in New York at noon Eastern, and Dallas in Utah at 10:30 p.m. Eastern. Both of those games are to be shown on ESPN.

The league called the notion of shifting game times — which can happen when a game is postponed — to a contingency plan included in the memo and distributed to teams obtained by The Associated Press. A decision on whether the transfer time is needed could come by late Friday. The league said any decision made on Saturday to postpone Christmas games would not affect the remainder of the day’s schedule.

The NBA has postponed seven matches so far this season, but has not postponed any matches since Wednesday. About 75 players in the NBA alone are dealing with virus-related issues this week, with more than 100 having done so at least once this season.

Some teams playing on Saturdays currently have multiple players and coaches in line with the league’s health and safety protocols; The Nets currently have 10 players on that list, the most known figure for any team.
