Newly promoted Cruz, Madriz lights up Pirates, Cubs 12-1 rout

PITTSBURGH ( Associated Press) — Newly promoted Oneil Cruz drove four runs and Bly Madriz got three hits in his major league debut to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 12-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night.

Both rookies were called up from Triple-A Indianapolis earlier in the day, and they made an immediate appearance.

Considered Pittsburgh’s top prospect, Cruz hit a three-run double to center field to complete the third inning with four runs to extend the Pirates’ lead to 7–0. He played in the third major league game of his career.

The 6-foot-7 Cruz also hit an RBI single in the fifth run of seven as the Pirates set a season record for most runs. He started the last two games of last season when he became the highest shortstop in major league history.

Madriz hit a two-run single in the second inning in his first game in the majors. The outfielder scored three runs, including the first of two Hoy Park sacrificial flies.

Madriz became the first Pirates player to have three hits on his debut since Jason Kendall in 1996.

JT Brubaker (1-7) had six scoreless innings, his first win since last August 24 (14 starts).

Brubaker threw five punches, landing five hits and walking three. He has a 2.65 ERA in his last six starts.

The Pirates took advantage of five runs from rookie Caleb Kilian (0-2), who scored seven runs in 2 1/3 innings. Kilian was making his third career start.

Daniel Vogelbach hit a two-run double in the Pirates’ big seventh inning, and a double from RBI’s Tyler Heineman made it 12–1.

The Cubs were number seven on Ian Happ’s single. Hupp, Rafael Ortega and Nico Hörner each had two hits.

Both teams came up to Monday having lost 11 of their last 13 games.

Cruz hit .232 with nine home runs and 11 stolen bases in 55 games at Indianapolis. Madriz became the 12th Pirates player to make his major league debut this year.

Cruz is the third shortstop in major league history to receive seven RBIs in his first three career games, along with Hall of Famer Paul Molitor and Trevor Storey.

Madriz became the first Pirates player to get a hit, RBI and stolen base in his first major league game since Andrew McCutchen in 2009.

The Cubs recalled Triple-A Iowa outfielder Nelson Velasquez and drafted right-hander Adrian Sampson to the same club.

Velasquez, last year’s Arizona Fall MVP, is one of 15 rookies to play for the Cubs this season. He debuted on May 30.

The game was postponed for several minutes at the end of the second half when a squirrel ran onto the field.

The squirrel seemed to have entered along the bleachers on the third side of the base. Then he rushed to the left corner of the field.

Three members of the garden crew were able to coax the animal out of the field through the bullpen gate.

Cubs: RHP Markus Stroman (right shoulder inflammation) is expected to throw the bullpen in the next few days, his first since he was placed on the injured list on June 7.

Pirates: RHP Zach Thompson (nerve inflammation in right forearm) was placed on a 15-day IL and said he did not think the injury was serious. The Pirates have not yet decided who will take Thompson’s place in the rotation. …1B Yoshi Tsutsugo (Psoas sprain), SS Kevin Newman (Left groin/left hamstring sprains) and INF/OF Josh VanMeter (Right ring finger fracture) are due to start rehab in Indianapolis on Tuesday.

Cubs: RHP rookie Matt Swarmer (1-2, 5.23 ERA) will make his fifth career start Tuesday night.

Pirates: Rookie RHP Roansy Contreras (1-1, 3.06) has allowed four tries in each of his last two starts.
