Nine Hong Kong rights activists sentenced for participating in ban on night vigil

Washington-Nine Hong Kong democracy activists were jailed for several months for participating in an unauthorized candlelight vigil to commemorate the brutal suppression of student protesters in Tiananmen Square in 1989.

The nine defendants included figures such as Albert Ho and Figo Chan, who participated in a controversial extradition bill in October 2019 that evolved into a greater need for greater freedom in the financial center earlier this month.

Earlier this month, nine defendants admitted to participating in the 2020 candlelight vigil that the authorities had banned on the grounds of the COVID-19 pandemic. A vigil is traditionally held every year to commemorate the suppression of a student-led democratic protest in Tiananmen Square in Beijing on June 4, 1989. They called for an end to official corruption, political reforms and a fairer and more open society.

Human rights groups believe that as many as thousands of people were killed when tanks drove through Tiananmen Square to suppress demonstrations.

The nine activists were sentenced to imprisonment ranging from 6 to 10 months. The other three defendants who pleaded guilty for participating in the vigil last year were sentenced to probation.

The demonstrations in 2019 prompted Beijing last year to approve a comprehensive Hong Kong national security law, under which anyone deemed to be engaged in terrorism, separatism, subversion of state power, or collusion with foreign powers can be tried if Convicted and face life imprisonment.

Since the law came into effect last year, the Hong Kong authorities have increasingly suppressed the city’s democratic forces.
