No. 10 USC takes over Georgia Tech to remain undefeated

PHOENIX – Boogie Ellis scored 16, Drew Peterson 14 and No. 10 USC made a weak start as they beat Georgia Tech 67-53 at the Colangelo Classic.

The Trojans (11-0) needed some time to resolve Georgia Tech’s offensive zone, relying on their defense before moving away from the Yellow Jackets. USC went on a big run to lead nine at halftime and kept making shots to remain undefeated in the second.

Georgia Tech (5-5) has had a tough game, losing to Wisconsin, North Carolina and No. 19 LSU before reaching the desert. The Yellow Jackets have had the biggest issue – 207th in Division I – and this continued against the tall, athletic Trojans.

Georgia Tech had some good moments in the first half but finished 33% off the floor and 5 for 19 from a 3-point arc.

Michael DeVoe led the Yellow Jackets with 25 points.

The Trojans have shown no shortage of runs in their follow-up to last year’s Elite Eight, locking teams while dominating in the paint.

USC placed its first 10 opponents on 61.4 points per game and 35% shooting, which included 3 to 27%.

The Trojans were at it again, but Georgia Tech’s had all kinds of problems with the zone, missing 12 of their first 14 shots – 3 for 1 for 6 – with four turnovers in the first seven minutes.

Then something clicked.

Better working the ball around Georgia Tech’s field, USC hit five 3-pointers and got into the lane for some close-range shots to go 33-18 during a 23-4 run.

The Yellow Jackets had their own offensive problems. He scored an opening 9–0 and scored the last six points of the first half but trailed 33–24 after scoring 10 of 30.
