No-frills, Affordable Flights to Europe: PLAY Airlines to Coming Soon from US Airports

According to an announcement on Thursday, Icelandic airline PLAY has opened reservations from two major US airports, offering budget travelers the opportunity to fly to over 20 European destinations at cheap prices.

“PLAY has started selling tickets to and from Boston and Washington DC. Flights from Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) will begin on April 20, 2022, and from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), on May 11, 2022, ”the company said in a statement. “PLAY has obtained all necessary permits to operate in the United States from the US Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration.”

On August 20, airlines applied for permission to operate scheduled and charter flights to and from Iceland.

PLAY was founded in 2019 by two former WOW air executives, Arnar Mar Magnusson and Sveinn Ingi Steindorsson. WOW was another Icelandic ultra-low-cost airline that ceased operations in 2019 after nearly seven years of operation. PLAY was originally called WAB (We Are Back) air.

The low-cost pay-what-you-need model has separate fees for everything from seat selection to checked baggage, and is suitable for value-conscious customers who don’t care about the luxury of travel (or bringing a heavy suitcase with them) and just want to get to their destination.

European destinations with PLAY include London, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Warsaw and Dublin among others. The company is currently headed by Birgir Jonsson, who was also the Deputy CEO of WOW. PLAY has approximately 135 employees and operates a fleet of four aircraft currently in service, with five more on the way.

“Travelers around the world are eager to travel to new destinations … nearly two-thirds of Americans plan their next vacation with an emphasis on international destinations. We are proud to be expanding PLAY services in the US, ”Jonsson said in a statement. “With our reliable and affordable flights, travelers can better enjoy their destination rather than spend extra money on flights to get there.”

According to Boston.com, PLAY is offering promotional tickets from the US to 11 European destinations for $ 109 if purchased before December 24. However, the discount is only applicable for round trips.

It remains to be seen if low-cost airlines will be able to weather the harsh uncertainty of the pandemic and heightened competition affecting many legacy companies. “It’s not doom and gloom,” Jonsson told The Baltimore Sun. “We’re starting over. We have no inheritance. We have no debt. We financed ourselves. … Our whole spirit is not to try to be a huge company. “

According to the airlines, they have a flexible policy regarding COVID-19, according to which passengers can change their travel routes for free if there is 24 hours before departure.
