'No One Plants A Tree Without Hope' - Dublin Samaritans Spread Important Message At Garden In Bloom Postcard

Dublin Samaritans Bloom 2022 will spread an important message in his postcard garden – that there can be a glimmer of hope even in the darkest of times.

The Forest of Hope is one of nine postcard gardens of the festival. These small show gardens, which are 2m x 3m, are designed by community groups, schools and charities.

The Garden is designed to raise awareness of the Samaritans’ 24/7 free phone service.

The inspiration behind the Postcard Garden is the charity’s Forever Garden, also known as the Forest of Hope, in the Dublin Mountains.

For €120 per year, anyone can plant a tree in the forest in their own name and all proceeds go to running the Dublin Samaritans.

Olwyn Green, who has been a volunteer with the charity for 15 years, said the exciting initiative was made possible by Coelte, which is donating the trees, and the Tree Council of Ireland, which gifted the land to him.

“This is a designated piece of land in the Dublin Mountains, it cannot be seen at this time because we are only getting started. We only launched it at the end of November,” said Ms. Green.

“So, this is really new, we planted our first symbolic tree in Fitzwilliam [Square, in Dublin] And that was our beginning.

“Coilte’s Pat Neville said, ‘No one plants a tree without hope’ and it’s such a wonderfully true thing, so we wanted to use that and call it the Forest of Hope.

“For an annual fee of €120 per year you can buy a tree, your name will not be on it so we cannot promise that – but you can walk in and see it, but it will take us three to five years. .

“It’s a long-term project and it’s for the long haul.”

Ms Green said she felt very fortunate that the charity idea for the Postcard Garden was chosen to be featured in Bloom because it was such a great platform to spread the message of the Dublin Samaritans.

“We are very lucky, I know a lot of people would have applied for it, it is a great performance.

“It raises awareness for us so we can’t really believe it,” she said.

There is a replica phone box in the garden, which shows the original of the donation.

“We came up with the idea of community going green because it is a small space, but we are getting as many trees as possible.

“So green is community, trees are our hope, our shelter, our force of life, and then we came up with the phone box and we’re using a replica phone box.

“It’s made of natural wood and we’re going to use that as our symbol everywhere.”

“Our mission is that fewer people die by suicide but we are for everyone.

“For lonely people, for people with financial difficulties. People will talk to a stranger more quickly, tell them their problem.”
