North Carolina State Transfer Joins Revised Butler Roster

Indianapolis ( Associated Press) — Butler coach Thad Matta landed his second big man in less than a week on Monday, announcing the addition of 6-foot-11 Manny Bates from North Carolina State.

He had 147 blocks in the grade transfer, the fourth in the school’s history, and shot 64.7% off the field in two seasons with the Wolfpack. He played just one game last season after suffering a shoulder injury in the first minute of North Carolina State’s season opener.

“Manny’s presence will be incredibly impressive defensively,” Matta said in a statement. “He blocks and turns shots at a high level. Offensively, his size and athleticism give him the ability to score in the post, in the pick-and-roll, and in the transition.”

The announcement came just days after Matta announced that 6-10 forward Jalen Thomas would transfer Butler from Georgia State. The Bulldogs also recently brought down former Akron swingman Ali Ali and a fourth player is expected to be announced soon to be transferred to the program.

Last week, Matta also hired former Ohio State stars Greg Oden and John Diebler to staff its staff.

Oden, IndyStar Mr. Basketball in 2006 and the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2007, will serve as Director of Basketball Operations. Diebler will be the director of recruitment.

“Both have great energy and strong basketball knowledge,” said Matta. “They will relate well to our players and help them grow on and off the court. I was excited years ago when they committed to being a part of my program as players, and I’m just as excited as they are joining my staff.
