North State Fishing Report for the week of November 19

Trinity River, Willow Creek – The position of the river on the lower Trinity is perfect. Most of the fishing pressure is upstream, but some steelhead and late fall kings are still making their way from the lower end. Lower Trinity is closed for adult salmon retention as of November 1. The Highway 299 to Denny Road Bridge at Cedar Flats in Hawkins Bar downstream of the bridge is closed for fishing from September 1 to December 31. As of Sunday, the flow was near 2,850 cfs on the Hupa gauge.

American River/Sacramento — The river is now closed to salmon from the hatchery at Ansel Hoffman Park to the SMUD power lines, but is still open beneath it. Steelheads, mostly “half-pounders” under reds or under rifles, can be caught in white water. Recommended flies include egg sucking leeches, intruders, egg patterns or other flies that have orange in the tie. Salmon are still being caught at the rear mouth of the university, near Discovery Park, and on the H Street and Howe Avenue bridges. In Fair Oaks the river flows steady at 581cfs.

American River/Above Folsom — The flow at Chili Bar is back at 164 cfs, and the river is clear and fishable. Quality sawdust and rainbows are sourced in the catch-and-release barbless hook only section above Folsom Dam. The American River watershed above Folsom Dam will be closed for a week before Memorial Day for bait fishing or the retention of trout.

Feather River – The lower river near Yuba is still cloudy but the fishing is viable and is getting better. The stretch of river from the outlet hole to the Live Oak boat ramp is now closed for the season. Half pounders and resident trout are still the best action, though there are live salmon sightings below the oak-starred Bend area. The water flow in Gridley is at 849 cfs. and are common in Boyd’s Landing at 1689 cfs.

Sacramento River, Red Bluff to Chico — The water level in Red Bluff almost returned to normal in the middle of the week at 4792cfs. The river is down to 6130 cfs on the Colusa Bridge. The river remains filthy with most salmon fishermen heading to the Metro Sacramento area or to the Trinity River.

Sacramento River, Metro Area – Off-colour but clearing and fishable even after the midweek spike. Fishing is picked up at the end of the week, and the bite should continue through the following week. Salmon is caught at the mouth of the American as far as Garcia Bend and on the American as far as H Street and Howe Avenue. The water flow at Fair Oaks is 581 cfs.

Auroville Lake – The lake grew 28 to 29 percent, and the launch ramps at both Spillway and Bidwell are now open. Bass fishermen are finding tremendous action for Spotted Bass with great presentations as well as reaction baits like umbrella rigs. Bass haven’t seen gear for months that has less water reaching back, and they’re biting. Losing gear on submerged trees is the norm as the lake is little for king salmon trollers to return.

Lake Shasta – Bass bite was solid throughout the week but stopped after Wednesday. Tournament anglers gave no real cause of the crash on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Phil’s Propellers’ pro staffer John Boitano reported that he caught the fish earlier in the week and caught fire in the bite using a lipless crank bait. The fish were small but they were many. Phil’s Propellers hosted their first ever Lake Shasta bass tournament with 92 boats outside the Bridge Bay Marina and Resort on Sunday. The lake is still dirty except for a few sides. The lake rose slightly to 24 percent of capacity, and Bridge Bay is one of the only launch ramps available.
