On January 6, Amul on its official Twitter handle tweeted a cartoon illustration of Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic referring to the current situation in Australia. Djokovic arrived in Australia on 5 January to participate in the upcoming Australian Open 2022. In its cartoon illustration, Amul called “Novax, Djokovic?” Taunting the world’s number 1 tennis player by saying. The organizers of the Australian Open had earlier announced in November 2021 that all players participating in the Australian Open 2022 would be required to be fully vaccinated against the virus. However, on 3 January, Tennis Australia chief Craig Tilly said that unconfirmed players would play in the tournament, noting that they had previously gone through a rigorous medical exemption application process.

What happened to Novak Djokovic after arriving in Melbourne?

Thinking he had all the necessary documents to participate in the coveted inaugural major tournament of the year, including allowing a Covid-19 vaccine exemption, Novak left for Australia and landed in the country on Wednesday. Djokovic posted a picture on his social media handle informing him of his departure for the tournament, which garnered huge outrage from the Australian public and media. The matter soon turned into a political drama and Djokovic’s visa was revoked and he was ordered to leave the country. However, he appealed the deportation order and is currently being held at the Melbourne Immigration Detention Hotel.
