Obama backs Biden’s call to change Senate rules to pass voting rights in op-ed

“The Voting Rights Act was the result of Democratic and Republican efforts, and both President Reagan and President George W. Bush signed off on its renewal while in office. But even though Senate Republicans now refuse to stand up for our democracy, Democrats should be able to get the job done with a simple majority.”

This Obama article comes on Tuesday’s call for Biden to act on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. Democrats do not have the votes to pass any bill without changing the filibuster rule, which requires 60 votes to end debate on the law.

As of now, the Democrats do not have the votes in their party to change the filibuster rules.

The former president said he “fully supports President Joe Biden’s call to revise Senate rules to ensure that pending voting rights legislation is called to a vote.”

“Filibusters have no basis in the Constitution,” Obama wrote. “We cannot allow this to be used to block efforts to defend our democracy,” he said.

“No law can guarantee that we will make progress on every challenge we face as a nation. But the law that guarantees the right to vote and ensure that every vote counts accurately , will give us a better chance to meet those challenges.” The former president said.

Referring to the American civil rights movement and longtime member of Congress for whom a bill is named, Obama urged that “now is the time for all of us to follow the example of John Lewis.”

“Now is the time for the US Senate to do the right thing,” he wrote. “America’s long-running grand experiment in democracy is being tested hard. Generations to come are counting on us to meet that test.”
