Obesity: the leading cause of endometrial cancer in Puerto Rico

The literature indicates that endometrial cancer can often be detected at an early stage because it causes abnormal vaginal bleeding and that it occurs as indicated in Dr. A.S. In this sense, the specialist clarified that through research it was found that obesity is a determining factor in the occurrence of this type of cancer.

“In the case of the endometrium, we know what’s going on because there are enzymes in the adipose tissue that make more estrogen, and that sends signals to the uterus for that endometrium to grow. This is a direct effect, through estrogen, ”explained a prominent gynecologist.

AT endometrial cancer already exceeds cervical cancer in terms of the number of cases, endometrial cancer well associated with the disease, Dr. Lopez said, adding that treatment options are quite specific in these cases.

“Laparoscopic surgery in obese patients is difficult, robotic surgery is not a luxury, it gives access in these difficult cases, it’s incredible,” he said.

On the other hand, it is important to note that on the island, a team of researchers led by Dr. Kimberly Garcia Irizarri, who works as a Resident Physician at the Episcopal Center of San Lucas in Ponce, along with Dr. Idhaliz Flores, Maria Rojas, pharmacist, Dr. José Oliveras, among other authors; It was revealed that obesity and diabetes mellitus are the factors that occupy the first and second place in terms of incidence.

They explained that the rise in obesity and diabetes in Puerto Rico, as well as factors such as pregnancy, lactation, menopause, endometriosis, and other risk factors associated with endometrial cancer.

“Today we see that the incidence endometrial cancer it is higher in Puerto Rican women. Among the most significant data of the study, it was found that 59% diagnosed endometrial cancer in the age range from 51 to 70 years,” they stressed.

In addition, they mention that “62% had a body mass index of 30% or more, which means they were obese, one of these patients had hypertension at the time of diagnosis, and 20% had diabetes.”
