Old Horseshoe is turning 100 and the festivities and nearly year-long party begin with the annual LiFEsports Spring Game on Saturday.
“Ohio Stadium holds a special place in the hearts of all Buckeyes and is a place of historical significance,” President Christina M. Johnson said in a statement. “Families celebrate the academic achievement of a loved one here, champions are crowned here and it has helped inspire many of us who love to be part of the Ohio State community. We are here with thousands of our closest friends. Very excited to celebrate 100 years at Shu and we look forward to celebrating this season further.
The large ‘Ole Stadium on the banks of Ollentangi is the most recognizable of all sports. Its horseshoe design has kept fans entertained throughout its 100 years for soccer games, starts, concerts, and more.
The first game in the venerable venue took place on October 7, 1922 versus Ohio Wesleyan. Since then, over 36 million fans have flown through their gates throughout history.
“I don’t know if there’s a more iconic structure in college athletics than Ohio Stadium,” said Gene Smith, senior vice president and Wolfe Foundation-endorsed athletic director. “Ohio Stadium has been home to so many wonderful memories, thrilling moments and momentous events over the past 100 years, and the university, the Department of Athletics, and the Buckeye Nation are all incredibly proud of our venerable and grand structure.”

To celebrate the anniversary of the milestone, here are some major events going on this year:
- A commemoration in the homecoming game against Rutgers on 1 October
- Starting August 20, the University Archives will sponsor “A Walk in Our ‘Shoe: 100 Years of Ohio Stadium” at the Thompson Library. The free exhibition will focus on the history of the stadium with historic uniforms and memorabilia from Bucky coaching veterans.
- Buckeye fans can share their memories and photos as the university collects and disseminates those stories throughout the year.
- Limited edition licensed merchandise celebrating 100 years of Ohio Stadium will be available starting with the Spring Game. It will also be available in the Team Shop or online at gobuckeyes.com.
I’m sure we’ll have more as we go through all the pomp and circumstance of celebrating a place on the National Registry of Historic Places throughout the year.
