On the eve of the summit, citizens of China and China, deported from the USA, allowed the American to leave

Shortly before President Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping met for a virtual summit this week, the United States sent seven Chinese citizens who had been convicted of crimes back to China and Beijing lifted the travel ban for the blocked American citizen. from departure for four years.

One of the repatriated Chinese citizens was a woman convicted of illegal entry in 2019 after she entered former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort with a cache of electronics, according to a senior administration official. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss delicate diplomatic issues.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The moves came less than two months after the United States reached an agreement to allow Meng Wanzhou, the senior executive of Chinese tech giant Huawei, to return home after nearly three years of diplomatic standoff. China reciprocated within hours, releasing two Canadians who were detained shortly after Ms. Meng’s arrest in Canada.

Two American siblings, who have been banned from leaving China for more than three years, have also been allowed to return to the United States. The siblings – Victor Liu, a student at Georgetown University, and Cynthia Liu, a McKinsey & Company consultant – have never been charged with any wrongdoing in China. But their father, Liu Changming, a former head of a Chinese bank, was wanted by the Chinese police for his involvement in a fraud case.

The travel ban for Mr. Liu’s children was seen as a way to force Mr. Liu to return to China and surrender.

This series of diplomatic actions appears to have been aimed at reducing tensions between the two governments, which are becoming increasingly confrontational on issues of trade, technology, human rights, the future of Taiwan and other issues. At their video summit this week, Mr. Biden and Mr. Xi did not reach a breakthrough agreement, agreeing only on the need to prevent tensions from escalating into all-out conflict.

The American who was allowed to leave China this month, Daniel Xu, has not been convicted of any crimes in China. Mr. Xu told The Associated Press last year that Chinese authorities blocked him and his wife from returning to their home in Washington state in August 2017, which Mr. Xu said was a clear attempt to persuade his father to return to Washington State. China and face it. embezzlement charges. Mr. Xu’s father, Xu Weimin, has denied the charges, AP reports.

Reuters previously reported on Mr. Xu’s return to the United States.

The State Department has warned Americans who are considering traveling to China of the dangers of “arbitrary detention and travel bans.” In most cases, the department says, US citizens only learn of the travel ban when they try to leave China.

One of the Chinese citizens that the United States sent back to China last Friday is Yujing Zhang, a businesswoman who snuck into Mr Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in 2019. After Ms. Zhang was interrogated by the secret service, agents discovered that she had four mobile phones, a laptop, and an external hard drive. They found an extra supply of equipment in her room at another hotel.

The incident exposed holes in Mr Trump’s security apparatus. But Ms. Zhang’s trial in Fort Lauderdale, in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida, did not try to find out if she was a spy.

The Miami Herald reported this month that Ms. Zhang finished serving her eight-month sentence at the end of 2019, but has since been held in immigration detention for much longer due to “deportation delays” associated with the coronavirus pandemic.

This week, China’s Foreign Ministry also announced the repatriation from the United States of Xu Guojun, a former bank manager who fled China two decades ago on corruption and embezzlement charges. A federal jury in Las Vegas found Mr. Xu guilty of conspiracy in 2008.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry hailed Mr. Xu’s return to China as a “major achievement” in the 20-year government prosecution in this case.
