Only 1 in 3 teens in the US still use Facebook

YouTube and TikTok are the entertainment platforms most used by American teenagers in 2022 (excluding video games), while popularity facebook among youth has declined sharply over several years, according to a Pew Research Center study released Wednesday.

Percentage of Americans aged 13-17 attending facebook fell from 71% in 2015 to 32% in 2022, according to the think tank. TikTok, for its part, is used “sometimes” by 67% of teens in the US and “almost all the time” by 16%. Chinese group ByteDance’s mobile app was only launched internationally in 2017, but its short and engaging videos, sorted for every taste with powerful algorithms, are enjoying phenomenal success, heightened by restrictions during the pandemic.

The platform competes fiercely with networks that have had to adapt in order not to lose too much ground. As such, its video format was copied by Meta (parent company facebook and Instagram in particular) and YouTube (Google), with “Paper Rolls” and “Shorts” respectively. However, YouTube wins the prize: 95% of American teenagers say they use it. Instagram has grown from 52% to 62% of users aged 13-17 (since 2015), while Snapchat is trailing them at 59% compared to 41% seven years ago.

Facebook is losing users for the first time

“People have many options to pass the time. And apps like TikTok are growing very fast.”, said Mark Zuckerberg, boss of Meta, last February. The social media giant has just delivered unflattering results, losing users for the first time on its historic platform. facebook.

TikTok, for its part, believes it is not playing on the same court. “We are an entertainment platform”said Blake Chandley, senior application manager, in an interview with CNBC in June. facebook it’s a social platform”added a leader who spent 12 years in facebook. “Their core business is their algorithms based on social relationships.”

Recently, a scandal erupted on Instagram when celebrities Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner called her to their place. “Becoming Instagram Again” and to “Stop trying to be TikTok”, the message was widely welcomed and shared by users. Critics especially criticize the platform for focusing too much on videos and content from algorithm-recommended creators, even if they are not part of the accounts users follow.
