Over a dozen civilians killed in DR Congo massacre

The military and the Red Cross said more than 12 civilians were killed on Saturday by members of a notorious rebel group in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“We heard gunshots early in the morning in the village of Beu Manyama. When we arrived, it was already too late because the enemy ADF had already stabbed more than a dozen of our fellow civilians,” army spokesman Anthony Mualushaiye told AFP. was killed by.”

Described by the so-called Islamic State as its local ally, the rebel Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) have been accused of killing thousands of civilians in the troubled east of the DRC.

Mualushai said that after the attack early Saturday, in the Beni region of North Kivu province, troops chased the attackers and “neutralized seven ADFs” and captured another.

The head of the local Red Cross, Philippe Bonane, put the death toll at 21-24 civilians and was overseeing the transfer of the bodies to the morgue.

The massacre comes after nearly a month of relative peace in Beni, where Congolese and Ugandan forces have been conducting joint military operations against the ADF since late November.

Another Red Cross representative said on Friday that soldiers in neighboring Ituri province had found 17 mutilated bodies believed to be victims of the ADF.

More than 120 armed groups roam the eastern DRC and civilian massacres are common.

Both North Kivu and Ituri have been in a “state of siege” since May last year. The army and police have replaced senior administrators to prevent attacks by armed groups.

Despite this, the authorities have been unable to stop the regular massacres of civilians.
