Pac-12 picks: Utah rolls, Oregon recovers, cogs don’t understand it and Cal wins outright

Hotlines are often tossed on social media for wrong selections and wrong predictions, and that’s okay. We will not predict the outcome of every Pac-12 football game if we consider it to be wrong.

But our launch for the Oregon-Utah game was embarrassing. Really poignant.

Not that we picked a duck to cover the spread and win the game straight. It was not an inappropriate scene at the time.

the piece that sticks in our gut is Why – Reasons cited for Oregon’s victory.

– We thought the Ducks would swing the ball successfully over the Utah defense that was porous against the run. Instead, Utes was immovable like Wasatch.

– We thought Oregon’s big stage experience would work well in tough conditions. Instead, the ducks responded to trouble like a wide-eyed cheater.

– We thought Utah’s special teams would falter at the worst possible time. Instead, he produced the biggest game of the game.

In other words, our forecast was as poor as the performance of the ducks.

And like Oregon, we need to respond appropriately.

Compared to the spread of each Pac-12 game over the course of 12 weeks, the hotline ranks our picks at a little over .500.

There are nine left: seven this weekend, plus the conference championship and Cal-USC make-up game on December 3.

We have no intention of finishing with a losing record.

Last week: 3-3
Season: 36-34-2
Five Star Special: 5-8

pacific all the time

Colorado (+23.5) in Utah (Friday)
To start: Fox. but at 1 pm
Comment: It’s all about timing: At what point will Utah have a sense of urgency after the huge win over Oregon? If UTS doesn’t focus till the second half, CU can cover such a huge number. But Utah looks like a team with next-level purpose and no plans to waver against an unrivaled opponent. And it is: It’s the final home game for the Utah Seniors who have been through a pandemic and the deaths of two teammates. no mercy. Select: Utah

Washington State (-1) in Washington (Friday)
To start: FS1 at 5pm
Comment: UW’s pass defense is the best in the country and should spell trouble for Cougars quarterback Jayden de Laura in his first Apple Cup. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing the Huskies manage their quarterback position. Will they use Sam Huard? (Tough place for a rookie.) Or can Dylan Morris up the career game in his first Apple Cup? WSU has been a better team during the season, has more playmakers and is largely healthier. Choose: Washington State

Oregon State in Oregon (+6.5)
To start: 12:30 pm on ESPN
Comment: The line has been cut in half by its outrageous starting figure, and for good reason: The Beavers won the no-name game last season and personnel to reflect Utah’s approach to the offensive against a weak Ducks defense. kept. The issue for OSU is the other side of the scramble: Its defense doesn’t share Utah’s talent and could struggle to stop Oregon’s ongoing play. Expect a bounce-back performance from Anthony Brown. Choose: Oregon,

Arizona in the state of Arizona (+20)
To start: 1 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network
Comment: If anything, the talent disparity is greater than it was a year ago, when the Sun Devils won 70-7 and sent Kevin Sumlin packing. The grit gap has largely closed, but even a career game from quarterback (and Phoenix-area native) Will Plummer won’t be enough for the Wildcats. They required an astonishing number of mistakes by the ASU (fines and turnover) to create the conditions for the dramatic finish. The Sun Devils are fully capable, but a two-point margin feels just right. Choose: Arizona
