Pakistan: Peshawar High Court grants bail to a man accused of kidnapping Hindu girl. International

A single-member bench of the Peshawar High Court has granted bail to a man accused of forcibly abducting a Hindu girl forcibly married a few days ago. According to Dawn, Justice Syed M Ateeq Shah accepted the bail plea of main accused in the case, Ubaidur Rehman, on the condition that he furnish two sureties of Rs 100,000 each.

Earlier, an additional district and sessions judge had granted bail to seven co-accused in the case, but turned down the plea of the main accused, forcing them to move the high court for their release on bail. In addition, an FIR was registered on December 20 at the East Cantonment Police Station of Peshawar on the complaint of a Hindu woman Shakuntala Bibi, who accused the petitioner and his alleged associate of kidnapping her adopted daughter.

Also, a case was registered under section 365-B (kidnapping of a woman to compel marriage) of the Pakistan Penal Code. Moreover, after registering an FIR, the local police had recovered the girl from Rawalpindi and arrested eight suspects, according to Dawn.

The complainant had adopted the girl and her brother in 2006 when they were children. Advocate Asfandyar Khan appeared for the petitioner and argued that his client had not abducted the girl and she had gone with her client of her own free will.

Meanwhile, the lawyer said that seven suspects named in the case have already been released on bail granted by the subordinate court. On the other hand, the counsel for the complainant opposed the bail plea and said that the ‘abduction’ was a minor girl and her abduction for marriage was a heinous crime.

He argued that the petitioner is already married and has two children. According to Dawn, the lawyer argued that the girl’s statement was recorded under duress as she was influenced by the suspects. (ANI)
