Teachers from 36 institutions in Valencia gathered this Friday morning at the doors of the centers because of the “crimes committed by Israel against the Palestinian people and which have already produced more than 11,000 victims, including about six thousand men and women.”
Called by the Platform for the Protection of Public Education in the Valencian Country, the group Teachers for Palestine and several education unions, joined forces with teaching workers who also demonstrated in other communities such as Catalonia, Aragon, or Madrid.
As the teachers explained in a statement, “In the past few days, we have informed our teachers and explained to our students what is happening in Gaza and Palestine in general, the reasons for this, the long years of occupation and oppression suffered by its people and the need for all of us to accept our responsibility as citizens; also our students, who teach a lesson of empathy and sensitivity in the face of injustice and this new genocide.”
According to this group, teachers have “the moral obligation to protect dignity and humanity as universal values and to oppose injustice and barbarism above all other considerations.” In addition, they assured that they have the support of BDS PaÃs Valencià .
open-air prison
Among the demands of the collective is the end of apartheid, the termination of employment, the right of return of refugees, the end of military collaboration and arms sales with Israel, the severance of diplomatic relations, and a “free Palestine, from the river to the sea.”
The Platform for the Protection of public education recalls, on the other hand, that “Gaza has been the world’s largest open-air prison for decades”, and that “its population cannot flee to a safe place and is deprived of basic resources to survive such as water, food, medicine, electricity, etc.”
