Palo Alto: Man Threatened After Interfering With Car Burglary

PALO ALTO. Authorities are looking for two men who broke into a car in Palo Alto last week and threatened to stab the man who intervened.

The incident was reported at around 7:30 pm on Nov.10 in a garage at 520 Webster St., Palo Alto police said in a press release Wednesday. By the time the officers arrived, the men were gone.

Police said the investigation showed that the victim, a man in his 40s, was driving on the second floor of the garage when he saw a couple of “suspicious” men. The victim parked on the third floor and went down to the second floor to see what they were doing.

Police said the victim heard the sound of breaking glass and saw men standing next to a gray 2007 Toyota Tacoma with a broken window. The men noticed the victim and ran away.

Police said the victim chased the men and knocked one to the ground. Then the two fought for about a minute.

During the fight, the victim’s folding knife fell from his belt and fell to the ground. The second man, who stopped to watch the fight, took the knife, held it up to the victim’s face and threatened to stab him if he didn’t leave, police said.

The victim relented, and both men ran into the alley toward University Avenue.

Police said the victim sustained minor injuries during the fight, but refused to receive medical attention at the scene.

Police said the men fled with the victim’s knife, but dropped the bag they had taken from the Toyota. The bag, which contained approximately $ 300 worth of personal property, was returned to its owner.

The victim described the men as Hispanic in their 20s and 30s. The man he encountered was about 5 feet 10 inches tall and had a heavy build; The man who brandished the knife was about 5 feet 6 inches tall and had a lean build, police said. They were last seen wearing black hooded sweatshirts, black trousers and face masks.

The police urged anyone who witnessed a property crime to call the police, keep suspects under surveillance from a safe distance, and provide a description to help police arrest them.
