Paul DeJong reappears after homers promotion, cards top nets

WASHINGTON ( Associated Press) — Paul DeJong headed home for a second straight day after ending a minor league demotion, Andre Palante entered the ninth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 5-0 on Sunday.

Corey Dickerson also replaced for the Cardinals, who broke the game in the fourth inning against starter Josiah Gray (7–7).

Washington star Juan Soto was 0 for 3 with a walk. Soto is one of several citizens that could be settled ahead of Tuesday’s trading deadline. Washington’s worst record in the Majors is 35-68 and went to 6-19 in July.

An All-Star in 2019, DeJong was demoted to Triple-A Memphis in May after hitting .130 with a home run in 24 games. He seemed to rediscover his power stroke with the Redbirds, trailing 17 homers in 51 games, including one in each of his last three games.

The boom has been carried over to the big companies. Djong made his comeback on Saturday, then rejoined the sixth inning on Sunday against Jordan Weems.

Pallante (4-4) allowed five hits in more than eight innings and secured his first road win for St. Louis, starting the day a game behind Philadelphia for the NL’s third wild card. The Cardinals went 4-4 on their three-city, eight-game journey coming off the All-Star break.

Palante scored a career-high eight and scored a run. The Nationals did not find a runner to third base until Palante chased down with a single and double to start ninth. Ryan Helsley retired the next three hitters to finish it.

Gray issued two four-pitch walks with one out in the fourth inning before retiring Djong. Dickerson then bowled a curveball down the right-field line for his fourth homer of the season.

Gray conceded four runs in five innings, scoring six runs in five hits.

Dickerson doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on the groundout of Dylan Carlson in second for the Cardinals’ first run.
