Paulino and Kofil reach semi-finals in World Cup 400m

Eugene, Ore. ( Associated Press) — She made her world championships debut in athletics with a stunning gold medal in the 4×400 mixed relay. And both are already comfortably established in the finals of that distance, but in individual mods.

It looks like this Friday’s race may bring more celebration to the Dominican Republic.

Marileidy Paulino and Fiordaliza Cofil won their respective semifinals on Wednesday and will try to become the 400-meter queens in Eugene, Oregon.

Kofil ran in the second heat, during which he fought a spectacular duel against Dutch Lick Klever. The Dominican won with a time of 50.18 seconds.

In the next race, it was Paulino’s turn, who improved on what his compatriot had done. She stopped the clock at 49.98 minutes, the second-highest record of the day, behind only Shauné Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas, who scored 49.55 in the opening heat.

The victory achieved in the mixed relay made Paulino and Cofil the first Dominican women in history to stand on the podium at the Athletics World Championship. He won the competition together with Lidio Feliz and Alexander Ogando.

Feliz dropped out in the 400m individual test during the day, while Ogando is already in the 200m final.

The Dominican delegation at the Olympic Games in Tokyo had already given a sample of their increased competitiveness. She won the silver medal in the mixed relay with Paulino, Ogando, Feliz and Annabel Medina instead of Kofil.

Puerto Rican Gabby Scott was eliminated in the semi-finals with a time of 51.97, the same as Cuban Roxana Gómez, with 51.12.
