The president of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, announced today that, starting next January 1, everyone over 65 years of age will be able to travel free of charge on public transportation in the Xunta. This is a measure from which more than 50,000 people will benefit.
The Galician president advanced this measure in the Plenary Session of the Galician Parliament, where he noted that this initiative joins the others of the Galician Government to support this group, included in the Budget of 2024. In particular, he pointed out +65 Card, similar to the Xove Card, and which will allow this group to enjoy discounts on services, establishments or entertainment.
Rueda defended that these types of initiatives show that next year’s Budgets are looking for “usefulness” and solving “people’s problems” and, in this specific case, to show that the Government of Galicia “continues to support the elderly.” “This is what people ask about. us,” he reasoned.
The president of the Xunta highlighted the historic nature of the 2024 Budget with 13,257 million euros and stressed that they protect social services, while contributing to Galicia that “continues to grow” and “continues.” “Galicia works with this Government,” he said.
The aim of this new step of the Galician Government is to extend to this group free payments that are already available to those under 21 years old through the Xente Nova card and from which almost 160,000 young Galicians have already benefited. In addition, it seeks to promote sustainable mobility in the community and facilitate transportation for the elderly, especially in rural areas, which often depend on public transportation to go to the health center, completing a procedure, or travel to a recreational activity.
