Peru: MLA accused of raping woman in Congress

LIMA ( Associated Press) — Peru’s women’s ministry confirmed that a congressman from the opposition Alliance for Progress party was condemned for sexual violations at her aid program by a parliamentary worker who accused the lawmaker of harassing her at congressional facilities. Imposed.

In a statement released Wednesday night, the ministry indicated it had “provided emotional support and legal attention” to the woman who “reported to be a victim of rape by Congressman Freddie Diaz Monago.” They said they are treating the victim and asked prosecutors “to act quickly in the matter”.

The woman, a parliamentary activist, sought help through the ministry’s national program Aurora, which was created to help rape victims. She specified that she was raped in one of the Parliament Houses after the MLA had drank on her.

The Speaker of Parliament, Lady Cammons, from the same party as the accused legislator, called for an inquiry into the congressman, and said that Parliament “condemns all forms of acts that threaten the integrity of women and that the prosecution should have all facilities will be provided”. His Alliance for Progress party announced his expulsion.

The Associated Press at this time attempted to contact the lawmaker’s office and his cell phone number to obtain his release, without success.

In 2005, legislator Leoncio Torres Calla was sentenced to eight years in prison for attempted rape against a 16-year-old minor who was hired by his legislative office.

According to officials, the victims of sexual violence in 2021 were 22,456 women, of whom 14,507 were girls and teenagers. According to the Live Birth Certificate Registration System, around 1,699 girls aged 12 to 17 became mothers in 2021. They indicated that 75% of cases of children below 15 years of age were rape and of children below 14 years of age, almost 100% were sexual assaults, he indicated.

The Peruvian parliament is, according to polls, highly unpopular among Peruvians. In June it reached 85% disapproval and barely 12% approval, according to a national survey by the Peruvian Institute for Studies.
