Peruvian researcher named young peace ambassador for research on mental health in Ukraine-Russia conflict

Jeel Moya-Salazar, a renowned Peruvian science scientist, was appointed as Peru’s first Ambassador of Peace through the Global Peace Chain (GPC)

This appointment took place at the Astoria Center in New York City, during the last summit on peace processes and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which included the participation of professionals, politicians, students, researchers and social actors from 90 countries.

At the event, Moya-Salazar presented her findings on the mental health impact of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, focusing on the effects on university students on three continents. The preliminary results of their research revealed a marked impact on well-being, highlighting the lack of medical support to address the psychological consequences of the invasion of Russia that began on February 24, 2022.

During the discussions at the summit, Jeel Moya-Salazar emphasized the importance of understanding the effects of armed conflict on health, especially for the second victim of situations like the conflict in Ukraine-Russia (CRU). Their research significantly contributes to SDG 3 and represents a milestone for Peru, which is the first evaluation of mental health effects caused by CRU.

The GPC recognized Moya-Salazar’s commitment to peace and the reduction of gaps between the Peruvian population and their region, giving him the title of Young Ambassador of Peace. It should be noted that, before his appointment, the GPC had no representation in Peru, making him the first Peruvian to hold this prestigious position.
