Before humans return to the surface of the Moon by 2025 through NASA’s Artemis program, the space agency is sending a rover to overcome hydration conditions.
The Volatile Investigation Polar Exploration Rover, or VIPER, is almost as big as a golf cart. It is expected to spend 100 Earth days in 2023 exploring the Moon’s south polar region for water ice deposits beneath the surface.
You can see VIPER for this Memorial Day weekend at the Chabot Space and Science Center, which is presenting the first full-scale replica of the robot to the public as part of the NASA Artemis Preview Weekend hosted by NASA’s Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley. doing. VIPER’s mission will follow work done in 2009 by the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, which detected evidence of water ice at the Moon’s poles.
