(CNN) — According to police, a West Virginia woman woke up from a two-year coma and in an incident in June 2020 identified her brother as the assailant.
According to a statement posted on Facebook by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, 51-year-old Wanda Palmer accused her brother of assaulting her at their residence near Cottageville, West Virginia, which police “attacked, killed and left dead.” left for”.
Police say they found Palmer in an “upright position” on his couch inside his home, mortally wounded by an ax-type weapon. Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger told CNN that when police arrived at the scene “they thought she was dead” but shortly after realized she was still alive and showing shallow breaths.
Police never recovered the gun used in the attack, Mellinger said.
A witness said he saw Palmer’s brother, Daniel, on the front porch of the house around midnight when he was discovered, Mellinger said. The sheriff said there were no phone records, surveillance footage or eyewitnesses outside Palmer’s home at the time of the attack.
Despite multiple investigations of individuals interested in the case, police were never able to bring charges against either person until Palmer was in a position to speak a few weeks ago, Mellinger explained. That’s when Mellinger said his office got a call from Palmer’s call center saying he was able to talk to the police.
Mellinger told CNN that Palmer was only able to answer yes or no questions with investigators, but that he provided enough evidence for police to arrest his brother Daniel.
Daniel Palmer III, 55, was arrested on Friday, July 15 on charges of attempted murder and intentional hurt, according to arrest records obtained by CNN.
He was presented on $500,000 bail, according to the Jackson County Sheriff, who said he did not know how he had pleaded for charges.
CNN was unable to identify an attorney for Palmer at this time, but contacted the Jackson County Public Defender’s office for details of the legal representation.
It is still unclear what Wanda Palmer’s current medical condition is, but she is now consistent and understands where she is. However, she is unable to hold a full conversation, the Jackson County Sheriff told CNN.
