Pope’s Commentary on the Need for Tequila Go Viral

Pope Francis recently joked with seminarians about needing some alcohol to deal with severe pain in his knee. He recently canceled a trip abroad due to illness, fueling speculation about his deteriorating health.

Pope Francis has been suffering from pain in his right knee in recent weeks due to a strained ligament, which has forced him to use a wheelchair on more than one occasion. Doctors have also prescribed physical therapy to help with his illness.

Pope Francis arrives at St Peter’s Square for the weekly general audience at the Vatican on May 18, 2022.

But following his general audience this week, he figured there was something else that might help him with his pain.

He was riding on his Popmobile towards the end of the audience, when some Mexican seminarian shouted to him to ask how he was doing with his knee. The exchange between the pope and the seminarians went viral when Francis said he could use some tequila to deal with his knee pain.

The seminarians asked him in his native Spanish how his knee was doing, and Francis replied that it was “Capricorn”.

The Pope said: “Do you know what I need for my knee? A little tequila. The Mexicans laughed heartily and promised to bring Pope Francis a bottle of the potent wine – considered Mexico’s national drink – the next time they visit the Santa Marta House in the Vatican where Francis lives.

Believers saw the Pope limping badly when he was presiding over the celebrations for the recent Easter celebration. He uses a cane to walk.

There are concerns that the Pope’s health at the age of 85 is not the same as it was when he was elected nine years ago. But close advisers have dismissed any speculation that the Pope is generally unwell.

The Argentine bishop of La Plata, Victor Manuel Fernández, met with the pope on May 14 and later tweeted: “He is in great health and in the same clear reflection as ever.”

Pope Francis has a busy itinerary for the remainder of this year, with confirmed visits to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan in early July and a separate visit to Canada at the end of the same month.

Still, doubts remain after he recently canceled a two-day trip to Lebanon in June due to a knee problem.
