President, Vice President, and Spouses Help Prepare Food for the Holiday

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden and his wife Jill helped local cuisine prepare Thanksgiving meals for those in need before leaving town – like millions of other Americans – to renew the family tradition of vacationing on tiny Massachusetts’ island of Nantucket.

Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff joined DC Central Kitchen, where they cook from scratch and receive cooking training.

Housed in the aprons of a DC central kitchen, the four spread turkey, gravy, sweet potatoes, and beans onto trays to pack for DC residents in need.

Jill Biden opened the White House holiday season on Monday when she received the White House’s official Christmas tree, an 18.5-foot Fraser fir cut from a North Carolina farm she called “gorgeous.” The tree is intended for the Blue Room, as a decoration for Christmas in the White House – the first President Biden.

The first lady also joined the president on a visit to Army Fort Bragg in North Carolina on Monday early in Thanksgiving with military personnel and their families.

The Biden were still dating when they first visited Nantucket with Biden’s sons, Bo and Hunter, in the mid-1970s. The couple was looking for a way out of the choice with whom of their families to spend Thanksgiving, the first lady wrote in her memoirs.

Biden was a US senator at the time, and his chief of staff invited them to go to Nantucket.

“And even though neither Joe nor I was ever one, we thought it sounded as good as everywhere else,” she wrote. So they filled the refrigerator with sandwiches and sodas, loaded the boys into a station wagon, and drove for six hours to the cape, where a ferry took them to the island.

Thanksgiving at Nana-Taket – as their grandchildren call the island in a play nicknamed Nana after their grandmother – became a family tradition for the next several decades, although, with a few exceptions, the First Lady wrote.

Last fall, Biden put the tradition on hold over concerns over COVID-19 in which people were told to avoid travel and gather indoors in large groups for the holidays. Instead, the then-president-elect sat down for Thanksgiving with only his wife, their daughter, and her husband.

Since then, both the president and the first lady have received a basic course of two doses of Pfizer vaccine, as well as a third revaccination recommended by health officials to provide stronger protection against the coronavirus.

Several members of Biden’s family visited the White House this week. On Monday, Hunter, his wife Melissa, and their toddler son Bo oversaw the delivery of the official Christmas tree. Hunter’s daughter, Finnegan, was later seen on one of the balconies holding Bo’s brother and watching their grandparents leave for North Carolina.

The White House did not reveal how Biden, who turned 79 last Saturday, plans to spend time on Nantucket.
