Presidential election in Sri Lanka today, there will be a triangular contest - know how long the picture will be clear

Sri Lanka Presidential Election: Voting for the Presidential elections is being held in Sri Lanka today. Three candidates are in the fray in the contest. Lawmakers on Tuesday 19 July proposed the names of three people, including caretaker President Ranil Wickremesinghe, as candidates. Wickremesinghe will face Dullas Alahapperuma and Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Results expected by late evening
The proceedings of the Parliament of Sri Lanka have started from 10 am Indian time. The first vote was cast by the speaker while the second vote was cast by Ranil Wickremesinghe. 225 MPs will rank candidates in order of preference in a secret ballot. Results are expected by late evening. Alhapperuma is a staunch Sinhalese Buddhist nationalist and a member of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party. At the same time, Disanayake is a prominent member of the leftist Janata Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).

Premadasa’s support of Alhapperuma
Earlier, S Premadasa, leader of Sri Lanka’s main opposition party Samagi Jana Balvegaya (SJB), said on Tuesday that he was dropping out of the presidential race to support Alhapperuma. Alhapperuma thanked Premadasa for supporting him and withdrawing from the presidential election. Later, Alhapperuma and Premadasa attended a joint press conference. It is being claimed in media reports that if Alhapperuma wins the presidential election, then Premadasa could be the next PM.

Former President to remain in office till November 2024
The new president will serve for the remainder of the term of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa until November 2024. It is worth noting that the former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who was going through political and economic turmoil, fled the country in the face of heavy public opposition and after that he announced his resignation. He is currently in Singapore. At present, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is temporarily holding the post of President.

For the first time since 1978, MPs will choose the new President
In Sri Lanka, for the first time since 1978, the country’s next president will be elected by lawmakers by secret ballot and not by mandate. Earlier, the post of President fell vacant only in the middle of the term in 1993, when the then President Ransinghe Premadasa was assassinated. Then DB Vijetunga was unanimously entrusted with the task of completing Premdas’s term by the Parliament.
