The plenary session of the Cabildo of La Palma unanimously approved the motion of the Socialist Group to “address the adaptation of the public education centers of Isla Bonita to climate change, with the development of a plan led by the institution of the island, in collaboration with the fourteen town councils, the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands, and the education community,” indicated a press release from the PSOE.
Socialist advisor Jordana Rodríguez thanked the support of all the political groups of the Insular Corporation and the contributions made to develop this plan to adapt educational centers to environmental challenges.
“We know that, despite not having the power of education to carry out these tasks, it seems important for us to lead as an institution a plan that notices the needs that each municipality provides for adapting areas and guaranteeing a safe and sustainable environment for our youth and future generations,” commented the PSOE adviser.
“This Cabildo is always on the side of the educational community of La Palma, whether with power or not, because we know that quality public education is the greatest guarantee of the growth of a sustainable and fair way to build a more prosperous island with opportunities for our youth,” said the counselor.
Jordana Rodríguez showed that “in the last mandate, without more, the Council of La Palma focused on the educational infrastructure that it has never done in its history, with decisive actions like the current principal at the School of Nursing of the University of La Laguna (ULL) or the headquarters of the National University of Distance Education (UNED) in Los Llanos de Aridane. “There is no one better than my fellow advisor, Susana Machín, who witnessed the efforts made in the last four years.”
But he indicated that we must continue to take measures, with preventive but urgent measures, “to protect the health of the educational community against this phenomenon.” In this sense, he emphasized that “The Canary Islands is the only autonomous community in the territory of Spain that was forced last year to cancel classes due to a heat wave. If this increase in temperature is often repeated outside the summer months, as scientists warn, the solution to solve this situation includes the rehabilitation and adaptation of educational centers with isolation systems, shade, green areas, and so on.
