PSVR2 specs: How it stacks up against the original PSVR, Oculus Quest 2 and Valve Index – IGN

Sony’s . In CES 2022 press conference, we finally got something Important details about PlayStation VR2, the company’s next-gen VR headset.

PSVR2 pricing, release date, and even what the headset actually looks like remains a mystery, but Sony shared plenty of information on the specifications powering its second virtual reality headset .

To better understand what we can expect from the PSVR2, let’s take a look at the specifications, look at some of the standout features, and compare what’s in the way of Oculus Quest 2, Valve indexes, and the original PSVR.

resolution and performance

Check out the graph above for a breakdown on how the PSVR2 stacks up with other VR headsets. Based on what we know about the PSVR2 so far, its closest competitor will be the Quest 2 in terms of resolution and pixels per eye. However, it’s important to note that while the headset gets its road date, it won’t have the highest pixel per eye count, as HTC’s Vive Pro 2 (not shown above) still takes that crown, with its 5K head-mounted display that offers 2448 by 2448 per-eye resolution.

Like other headsets currently available, the PSVR2 will offer a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and, like the original PSVR, will feature an OLED panel. We previously discussed the difference between LCD and OLED display When comparing displays on the original Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED, but the major difference between the two types of displays is how they light up.

LCDs use one (or more) backlights to create a continuous light on the screen. Whereas OLED’s method is to use self-illuminating pixels because OLED displays work on a pixel-by-pixel basis, meaning it will only light up when there is an image to display. LCDs are generally brighter, but OLEDs allow for better contrast ratios and deeper blacks. Still, there are some caveats to note when we focus on VR headset displays and not traditional displays like TVs.

The most obvious one is that OLEDs are a bit more expensive, and as such Analyst Ross Young noted in a recent research paper while discussing Apple’s rumored VR/AR headsetOLED screens are not common in modern VR headsets due to the lower pixel density (which can result in lower image quality) than LCD panels in head-mounted displays. Young notes that OLED panels with higher pixel densities can be incorporated into the technology, but are likely to be more expensive. Although we’re unsure of the actual specifics of the PSVR2’s display, it’s undoubtedly an OLED.

to keep track

The inclusion of inside-out tracking in the PSVR2 is a huge improvement over the need for using a first-generation PSVR. ps camera, LED, and accelerometer/gyroscope to track your movement. Similar to the Quest 2, the PSVR2 has four built-in cameras, so the headset can track both your movement and the controller.

But the PSVR2 adds a new, distinctive feature that even Meta’s flagship VR headset doesn’t offer: eye tracking. Eye tracking will allow Sony’s upcoming flagship VR headset to detect motion in your eyes. As ps blog notes, This means looking in a different direction will generate an additional input, which could allow for greater immersion in games designed for the PSVR2. rumors suggest that valve is working on another VR headset can keep an eye Plus, which means the feature could potentially be used by a wider team of developers than just those making PSVR2 games.

The PSVR2’s controllers are a standout feature of the new device. similar to DualSense PS5 Controller, PSVR2’s sense controller Each controller will feature haptic feedback and adaptive triggering, offering a huge leap forward in aging playstation move controller Used for original PSVR.

The addition of haptic feedback and adaptive triggers to the Sense controllers, combined with support for haptics in the headset, allows the PSVR2 to provide far greater immersion than its predecessor or other VR headsets like the Quest 2. As the PS blog post notes, sensory features from the new headset and controllers will bring players “closer to the gameplay experience,” such as feeling a character’s high pulse during stressful moments.

Additional Hardware Requirements

The PSVR2 is designed specifically for the PS5, which means the headset won’t work unless connected to the console, as was the case with the original PSVR, which needed the PS camera to function properly. Requires PS4 or PS5 (with adapter). , It’s in-line with high-end PC-based VR headsets like the Valve Index or HTC Vive Pro 2, which require a connection to a VR-ready gaming PC in addition to a base station sensor for tracking.

It’s in stark contrast to Meta’s widely popular Oculus Quest 2, which is a standalone headset that doesn’t require any additional hardware to run. (That said, the Quest 2 does offer the option to play SteamVR games when connected to a gaming PC.)

Although the PSVR2 will still be connected to a gaming console, Sony is streamlining (and shortening) the cables required to use the next-gen VR headset. The PSVR2 will use a single cord to connect to the PS5, and thanks to its built-in cameras, no additional sensors are needed. it’s very easy setup Compared to the original PSVR, which requires multiple cables, the PS camera, and a small processor unit box, which tends to clutter up your play space.

PSVR2 hasn’t received a release window yet, let alone a proper release date, and the price is also a question mark. Hopefully, Sony will share more details about the PSVR2 throughout the year.
