The former socialist deputy Odón Elorza shared in an article published in his personal blog his opinion and the doubts created by the possible amnesty that the new government of Pedro Sánchez will give to the leaders of the process .
Elorza wondered, to begin with, what kind of amnesty is on the table of negotiations between the different leaders of the PSOE with the independents of the Junts and ERC, and directly questioned the effectiveness of the grace measure of development in the coexistence of Catalonia. In his opinion, the amnesty was proposed today, after the granting of its constitutionality was “denied” by the PSOE, only because of the supervening “pure need to make viable” the investiture of Sánchez as president.
It sets “what price” must be paid by the party to which it belongs and “how long” if it finally becomes a reality. For the former mayor of San Sebastián, it is important that Ferraz explain to the citizens “the reason for our turn on this delicate issue.” At the same time, he expressed his concern about how the amnesty will affect the coexistence of the rest of the country, the Congress and the governability of Spain.
For the socialist leader, “such a debatable step” must be accompanied by gestures and concessions that also come from pro-independence groups. “What did they give? What did they promise in return? “he stated rhetorically.
The amnesty, defense of Elorza, cannot be presented to the citizens as “the forgiveness of a democratic State to those who declare ad nauseam that they will do it again, that they will once again promote a unilateral process , which violates the Constitution.” He also admitted that in the PSOE he now trusts Puigdemont, “who as a politician has not earned respect because he despises Spain and democracy.”
The former Basque deputy suggested that the hypothetical Law granting the amnesty include in its Preamble an admission by the ERC and Junts that the process is “against the rule of law” to ensure that it does not happen again and that it groups “reject the unilateral route, in favor of dialogue, always within the framework of the Constitution.”
He criticizes, in the same line, that the PSOE of Sánchez does not promote the minimum guarantees from a democratic and constitutional point of view that this decision should be explained, which, from his point of view, causes of a “loss of credibility.” party that it will surely affect them if new elections are called.
“There is no Plan B (…) to prepare for the assumption of an electoral return. Even at the risk of paying a dangerous electoral bill due to a wrong strategy and the absence of a communication that policy to explain the reasons for our radical turn on amnesty. If the new elections are finally held, we will be in a position of great weakness,” Elorza complained in his analysis.
Because of this and his disagreement with the fact that the internal consultation does not directly ask the militant if he supports a possible amnesty by doing it in a general way about the agreement with Sumar, the veteran leader of the PSOE asked to hold a new one. consultation that clearly asks about amnesty once the agreement with the Catalan independentists is ready.
