PITTSBURGH ( Associated Press) — Jose Quintana hit six scoreless innings for his first win since 2019 and Pittsburgh’s first win this season as the Pirates beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 on Monday night.
The Pirates also ended a 16-game losing streak against the Dodgers in 2018 and broke Los Angeles’ six-game winning streak.
Quintana (1-1) made five strikes, allowing four hits and four walks. His previous win came while pitching for the Chicago Cubs in Milwaukee on September 5, 2019.
The veteran left-hander has been plagued by injuries and ineffectiveness in recent seasons, with 20 starts and 42 appearances between wins.
“Huge,” said Quintana. “It’s hard to get hurt. I kept working hard. I knew this day would come. I’m really happy to win against a team like this. It’s cool. Just keep spinning. All the starters.” Get the confidence and we can do it.”
The Pirates eventually won their first win over the starter in their 28th game, a major league record for starting a season. In 1989, the Baltimore Orioles set the old mark, starting 0-21.
“You guys are more obsessed with (streak) than I am,” said Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton. “We just want to win, regardless of who gets the credit.”
Pittsburgh’s last win over the Dodgers was on June 6, 2018. Los Angeles also won 25 of the last 27 matches between the teams.
“It’s baseball,” said Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts. “He overtook us and he got us out tonight and that’s the ballgame. I thought Quintana was really good.”
Julio Urius (2-2) conceded two runs in more than six innings, conceding 11 hits. He hit four and no one moved.
Pittsburgh rookie Jack Suwinsky hit his first career home run, taking a two-run shot at center field in the eighth inning of Robbie Erlin to take a 5–0 lead. Michael Perez is also linked to Pirates.
“You think about it for a long time and when it happens it still blows mind,” Suwinsky said with a smile.
Pinch-hitter Edwin Rios’s leadoff home run in David Bedner’s ninth inning kept the NL West’s dominant Dodgers off the ground for the first time this season.
Brian Hayes had three hits for the Pirates, while Brian Reynolds, Michael Chavis, Yoshi Tsutsugo, Diego Castillo and Ben Gammel added two hits each.
The top six hitters in the order were a combined 13 for 23.
The Pirates opened the scoring in the fourth inning, when Chavis lined up a third for the center and scored on Tsutsugo’s sacrificial fly.
Perez took a seventh-place lead with his homer, ending the night for Urias. Chavis added a sack fly later in the innings.
The Dodgers placed the runners in first and second in the second, third and seventh innings, but could not take advantage of it. He dropped eight runners at base, though Mookie Bates extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

Triple-A Oklahoma City right-hander Ryan Pepiot joined the Dodgers before the game and was placed in the taxi squad.
Paypayt is likely to make his major league debut and debut on Wednesday in the last game of the series. He is 2-0 with 2.05 ERA in six starts.
Erlin is also likely to start after being called up from Oklahoma City at the end of last week.
