A moment of reunion to continue the birth of UNEAC, an organization born from fruitful debates between intellectuals and creators, but above all to confirm the will of its members to preserve their essence; Thus, on August 22, th 62nd anniversary of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba was celebrated.
The national headquarters of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba hosted part of the celebrations, but in the morning two of their most emblematic members arrived in the community: the poet Miguel Barnet, Honorary President of UNEAC, and the National Literature Prize Winner Nancy Morejón at the House of Artists and Creators of the Municipality of Centro Habana to see part of her extensive poetic work.
The organization’s president, Luis Morlote Rivas, recognized the work of hundreds of writers and artists, as well as the coordinators of community cultural work, who demonstrate an essential commitment to service beyond their day-to-day work. This anniversary, he said, has many motives. The TENTH Congress was recently convened for a moment to review everything that has been done over the past few years, but essentially, it motivates the fact of continuing to contribute to the welfare and spirituality of the nation. Morlote Rivas congratulated the hundreds of valuable artists, patrons, and writers who continue to contribute to making Cuba better, which is also a contribution of the Cuban artistic and intellectual movement, he assured.
The Hilos Mágicos and Cirkavana companies showed visitors to the celebrations the transcendence of puppet art and the power of pulsating and acrobatic skates, a show followed by actors Alden Knight and Corina Mestre as a tribute to the poet Nicolás Guillén, who experienced the founding years of UNEAC together with other intellectuals.
Important personalities of Cuban culture celebrated this birthday to the beat, always with an eye on the UNION, which needs to be accompanied, discussed, and created. For the renowned actress Verónica Lyn, it is a source of pride to belong to UNEAC and to share so many values that this union embraces, which will always be necessary, because the criteria of professionals, creators of intellectuals are always needed.
For her part, teacher Aurora Boch, one of the four jewels of the National Ballet of Cuba, said she was happy to celebrate this new anniversary and that the organization was growing across the country, adding young members every time and constantly renewing itself.
Having so many artists and writers in one organization is hard to find in the world, said poet and president of the UNEAC Poetry Department Karel Leyva. But it is a union of diversity, of thoughts that follow, observe, and suggest everything that surrounds them about the world they live in and from which they preserve memory and history while projecting into the future.
To conclude the celebrations, the Aragón Orchestra again conveyed identity to the rhythm of iconic themes that have marked the musical history of the greatest of the Antilles: Cachita, Even Queen Isabella Dances, Danzón, and Nosotros were part of the tour and that the public always appreciates. It is a group that, like UNEAC, does not renounce its essence, even in the renewal of its members. This time, in 2023, the gift to the organization that brings together Cuba’s artistic and intellectual avant-garde was expressed through a commitment to always bet on creation and the well-being of the nation.
