Sometimes journalists get lucky and discover information they didn’t expect when reporting a story—a document or report, perhaps even evidence of earlier misdeeds. But I don’t remember ever reading a feature where the reporter discovers a previously unknown child, as Devin Gordon did in his own. Vanity Fair Profile of singer Grimes, former partner (she says They split again but remain friends) Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. The two welcomed their first child – a son whom they gave an unusual name – in May 2020.
But as far as the general public knew, the couple had only one child. Gordon soon finds out otherwise. When he is interviewing Grimes at his new home, he thinks he hears the cry, but brushes it off. After all, it’s undeniable: There’s a kid somewhere in the Grimes home, and she knows he knows. So like a good reporter, he goes for it.
So I brace myself to ask the weirdest question of my career: Do you have another child in your life, Grimes?
After trying to avoid the question at first, she eventually admits, yes, the couple did have a child in late 2021 via a surrogate, named Exa Dark Sideril Musk, nicknamed Y.
In addition to another secret baby, we also learned the following:
- Grimes thinks of her son – whom she calls X – as Paul Atreides Dune and as Paul’s mother, Jessica herself
- Musk casually mentioned to him a while back that he plans to go to Mars in 10 years
- She Doesn’t Take the “Frantic Pixie Dream Girl” Description Offensive
From the secret babies to Musk’s apparent 10-year relocation plan, this entire piece is a wild ride that’s better read than read again. so read Vanity FairCover story on Grimes for a master class in the celebrity profile genre, then come back here so we can talk a little more about it.
