Real initiatives to reduce the CO2 footprint with the help of neighbors

The municipality of Juzbado has implemented a set of actions aimed at reducing the CO2 footprint of its municipal infrastructure and, in general, the municipal area. The participation of this small municipality in the fight against climate change through an energy strategy is an example for many other municipalities in the province. In 2018, the expensive and inefficient heating sources in the town hall building were replaced by pellet stoves powered by a renewable source. With these changes made in the assembly, the municipal library, the doctor’s office or the living room, a process of adapting to climate change in Juzbado’s energy infrastructure has really begun.

It was recently announced, by the Provincial Council of Salamanca, the granting of new aid to this town of no more than 200 inhabitants, for the replacement of the boilers of the Museo de la Falla with a pellet boiler, as even in the installation. of the new pellet stoves on the upper floor of the Town Hall. The public lights in Juzbado have been completely replaced with new, more efficient devices. With this action, the three-phase energy will be stopped and, therefore, the city council will significantly reduce the impact on the environment and the total calculation of greenhouse gas emissions.

But the contribution of the Juzbado City Council to mitigating climate change, within the framework of its Urban Agenda, has other lines of action. One of them, started more than a decade ago, consists of planting trees in the municipality, which adds to the public forest. This reduces heat island effects, increases the shadow surface and fixes CO2. A good proof of this is the technical communication made by the technicians of the Local Development Office of the National Environment Congress (CONAMA18), where the first results of the inventory, through citizen science, of public trees and calculation of oxygen production. Another strategic line is the creation of composting areas that, in the end, contribute to the reduction of the amount of waste that must be transferred from Juzbado to Gomecello CTR and, therefore, also the emissions. The calculations are still being analyzed, but everything shows that this measure, easy to implement in any other city, has many positive implications in reducing energy dependence.

The creation of new wooded areas and their maintenance has been part of the climate and energy strategy of the Juzbado Urban Agenda for years. Trees improve the quality of stay for residents, but also contribute to the fight against climate change. The children’s nursery of indigenous species, the biodiversity tree pit or the environmental volunteering to plant trees in the municipality that has been done since 2008, are just a few examples of Juzbado’s initiatives.
